Yet, this skill or lack of it will have more impact on a child’s life than perhaps any other academic skill they will ever learn.
Alphabet:
Although learning the alphabet (letter identification) is an essential literacy skill, it is not necessary to learn the alphabet before learning how to read words. In fact, it is perhaps easier to learn how to read whole words than it is to learn to identify individual letters, early in life.Watch the video (coming soon) to find out why, and learn other literacy skills for developing your early reader, including: • The Alphabetic Principle • Reading Whole Words • Phonics Skills
Background Knowledge:
Developing a broad range of background knowledge helps young children grow in confidence when learning how to read. Reading them many picture books or playing various games with toddler picture cards are great early learning activities for developing background knowledge.
Phonemic Awareness:
Phonemic awareness skills focus on a child’s understanding of oral language. Some examples would include a child’s ability to rhyme words, blend sounds, and identify beginning sounds (onsets) of spoken words. These skills can be developed through a variety of literacy activities, games, and repeated readings of rhyming books, such as the timeless books written by Dr. Seuss.

Teach your child the necessary skills to become an early reader, and you will give them the “Gift of Literacy” that will last a lifetime.Learn how you can teach your toddler to read, as you finish this seven part series.
